Fussy Eating 

Most babies and toddlers usually eat whatever foods they are served. However, things can change with many toddlers going through a phase of fussy or picky eating such as not liking the shape, colour or texture of particular foods or foods touching; an unwillingness to eat familiar foods or to try new foods such as fruit and vegetables.

This happens for lots of reasons including toddlers testing limits, their parents’ patience and establishing their independence.

What starts out as a fussy or picky eating phase can quite easily and sometimes quickly develop into a more longer-term habit, often without parents even realising it. Having a fussy eater can be frustrating and stressful for parents concerned about their children’s limited food choices and their overall nutrition.


Fussy Eating Expert Help 

How does it work?

Dr. Colette offers one-to-one support that is both parent led (there’s lots you can do to help your child eat better) and child-centred (we don’t expect your child to do anything that they aren’t comfortable with, at that time) that is tailored to suit your family.

An initial consultation starts with what your child is eating at the moment and gaining an understanding of the challenges involved.  We then work together to develop a customised action plan to help improve your child’s eating.

Follow up consultations will help you establish regular meal and snack times, focus on foods that you and the rest of your family normally eat resulting in less effort, stress and worry at mealtimes; and get your child on board with tasting new foods leading to a healthier relationship with food; as well as developing lifelong healthy eating habits.

 What’s involved?

Each personalised consultation lasts 45-60 minutes and can be in person in Galway and throughout Ireland (online or phone).  The consultation includes:

  • A step-by-step action plan that is developed and emailed to you afterwards plus
  • A follow-up phone/online call (one to two weeks later) to check in with you about progress and how best to move forward. 

We ask parents to complete a list of all foods and drinks consumed during 3 recent days for their child before the initial consultation.

Usually three to four consultations are required in total, but this depends on the individual child.  Fussy eating habits can successfully be turned around for many families over an 8 to 10 week period. Its best to start with the initial consultation and then decide if this is the right kind of support for you.
